Austria

The rebirth of an ancient winemaking tradition

Austria is one of Europe's most exciting wine-producing countries, combining a thousand-year-old tradition with a modern and rigorous approach to viticulture. Following the quality revolution of the 1980s, Austrian wines have established themselves on the international scene for their stylistic purity, aromatic precision, and extraordinary ability to express the terroir. From the steep terraces of the Wachau along the Danube to the gentle slopes of southern Styria and the volcanic soils of Burgenland, each region offers unique expressions, united by a typically Alpine freshness, minerality, and tension on the palate.

A heritage of native grape varieties and more

The strength of Austrian winemaking lies in its native grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner, capable of expressing an impressive range of styles, from light and peppery wines to deep and complex interpretations; Blaufränkisch, which in its best examples combines tannic structure, dark fruit, and refined spice; Zweigelt, which is more rounded and accessible; and the rare Rotgipfler. There is no shortage of original interpretations of international varieties such as Riesling, which here takes on a particularly mineral and vertical character, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, in addition to the traditional sweet wines made from botrytized grapes from the Neusiedlersee region.
