SOUTH TYROLEAN RED WINES

The alpine elegance of South Tyrolean red wines

South Tyrolean red wines represent a perfect combination of alpine freshness and stylistic refinement. This border region, where Central European and Mediterranean influences meet, produces red wines with an unmistakable character, distinguished by lively acidity, marked minerality, and generally elegant tannins. The mountain climate, with significant temperature variations between day and night, together with the predominantly porphyritic and calcareous soils, gives South Tyrolean red wines an intense, clear aromatic profile and extraordinary drinkability, making them extremely versatile at the table.

Lagrein and Pinot Noir: the undisputed stars

Our selection primarily highlights the two great red protagonists of the region. Lagrein, the native grape variety par excellence, best expresses the character of South Tyrol with its intense color, aromas of wild berries, violets, and spices, and a robust but never heavy structure. From ready-to-drink Lagreins such as those from Cantina Tramin to the more complex versions from Erste+Neue, this grape variety offers a fascinating range of expressions. Pinot Noir finds one of its favorite territories in Italy in South Tyrol, with interpretations that combine the finesse and elegance typical of the grape variety with an unmistakable alpine character. Excellent examples are the refined Pinot Noirs from Elena Walch and Franz Haas.

International character and indigenous gems

In addition to the main protagonists, our collection explores the excellent adaptation of international grape varieties to the South Tyrolean terroir. Merlot and Cabernet find expressions of great character in the warmer areas. There is no shortage of interpretations of lesser-known but highly appealing indigenous grape varieties such as Schiava (Vernatsch), which offers light, fruity wines that are extraordinarily drinkable. Whether you are a fan of elegant, regional red wines or looking for labels to pair with your everyday meals, South Tyrolean reds are an excellent choice, capable of surprising you with their balance of alpine character, finesse, and gastronomic versatility.
